I’ve got things to say and they will be heard!
1) I have an opportunity to buy my mom’s “project” NA Miata in the next year, yet somehow I’m way more attracted to an MR2 Spyder. Am I bad person?
2) After dozens of hours of consideration , I still really want a Land Cruiser. But since I don’t want to give up either of my vehicles, I guess the only thing I can do is start saving for one. Current Land Cruiser Fund balance: $90.00
3) I ate too much pumpkin cheesecake.

You are a great person for not wanting a miata

1) Nah, you’re not a bad person.
2) If you stop drinking coffee, you could save $3 or whatever a day! With around $1000 saved a year, you could buy a Land Cruiser in... [checks math] ... you know what, keep drinking coffee.

That's kind of a weird thing to say.

I prefer the MR2 as well. I think it’s because I don’t see them everyday.

I do love those MR2 convertibles. I seriously considered one before buying my Miata, but the lack of cargo space killed it for me. I feel like you can either have a weekend bag or a passenger in the MR2, but not both. But I still love them.

The Miata will have more storage space, be more useful.
But so will an SW20

define “not great” because as far as running forever, they’re pretty much solid there. or you can swap in the 3.8 from the endeavour. or bolt up the lexus 1uz from the sc400...

Honestly? I feel like 90% of the time you see someone on here say “Miata Is Always The Answer” it’s by someone who doesn’t own one. It’s a fun car. But it’s not for everybody, and that’s fine. So if you don’t like it, cool. It just seems weird to me to s ay that someone is great for not wanting one.

I personally think its too overhyped by this website and i dont see why. so when i see someone trying to buy something be sides a miata, i feel very refreshed

I absolutely adore those MR2's. I don’t care if it’s “the bad” generation. They’re so unique. Try to get a green one? That said if you buy a red Miata just THINK of twins-ing opportunities!
So you have a preferred Land Cruiser gen?

MR2>Miata, any day.

ZZW30 MR2 is a point A to point A car for sure. The trunk on an NA is pretty good, I always thought.

Series-100, facelifted. Looking forward to purchasing one by 2036. Oh wait, they’ll be selling for 50 grand on BaT by then. HMMMM....

The trunk on my NA is big enough for a suitcase or several duffel bags. Plenty of room for gear for a long weekend for 2 people. That was the deciding factor over a ZZW30 MR2. I wanted something I could take on a trip.

Yeah, I was like, “I’ll set aside like $100 a paycheck. That’ll add up in no time!”

MR2!

Or, whenever the end of year bonus comes in (or overtime, or raises) save that!
Wait, what do you mean other more important adult expenses came up?

I drove my mom’s for a little while in college. Space and storage was never an issue.

1. MR2!!
2. I dont understand Land Cruiser values
3. Sharing is caring

They are neat little cars for sure. I like mine, even if I occasionally think about selling it from time to time.
Is the one you’re considering a 1.6L or 1.8L?
![]() 10/30/2018 at 22:26 |

Yeah, let’s face facts: it’s never gonna happen for me. If I ever had $18,000 extra lying around, the probability I’d ever use it on a vehicles is near zero.

1.8L, 1994

That’s exactly what I have. It’s a good car, and it’s got maybe 96,000 miles on it.
So what makes yours a project?

There’s a drain that kills the battery after it sits for two days, we’re pretty sure it’s the stereo but who knows. Needs an entirely new exhaust system. Clearcoat is gone, wheels are trashed, speedometer doesn’t work, fuel gauge is on the frits, my uncle closed the hood with the prop in the way and it’s misaligned, stuff like that.

That does sound like a project. When I bought mine, it used to not always start. It ran fine if it started though. Finally got it running and took it to an auto shop to get the battery and alternator checked. Turns out the previous owner installed a marine battery quick disconnect and it was starting to wiggle loose.

Same. I drove an NB Miata back-to-back with an MR-S, and was floored by how much I preferred the Toyota. The Miata’s engine was more eager, but the MR-S was so planted (I realize that the suspension was likely set by the OEM to understeer predictably at the limit) that I felt ready to hustle the car after a couple of turns.
If I could find one and the unobtanium hardtop, I'd snatch it in a heartbeat. And then I'd be thinking about a Celica GT-S engine swap.

That's okay, your Sportcross will be going for double that

They’re pretty gutless, though. And they don’t get great mileage.

If I don't exceed 100k miles, I bet it could be worth quite a bit someday.

It’s a torque motor, and geared appropriately. It’ll crawl up a hill of gravel like it’s flat pavement. Mine’s got 35's and 4.90 gears in the back, and the offroad performance is great. my mileage is about 17 mpg average. Yes, I’ve had more powerful motors in smaller cars, but it does the job. I do really want to swap in the 3.8, though.
